An Ode to French Fries 🍟 ❤️

Ode to French Fries

Golden slivers, crisp delight,

You gleam beneath the diner light—

A humble gift, so gently fried,

Yet stir such longing deep inside.

You sizzle like a whispered vow,

A salted kiss upon my brow.

Oh fries, you slender, sacred flame,

No caviar could stake your claim.

I’d cross the world, through sand and snow,

For just one curl of your potato.

And when you're gone, my heart still cries—

Forever yours, my sweet French fries.

The Craft Alliance sales team share their favourite pairings to salute these salty slivers on the national day of the French Fry…

French Fries & Champagne, or closer to home, a Methode Traditionnelle style bubbles like Marri Wood Park’s Vintage Sparkling Chenin Blanc. This is a match made in deep-fried heaven. Salt and fat, perfectly matched with acid and bubbles – it is humble meets the high life. The crisp, fresh bubbles with beautifully taut acidity, matches perfectly with hot, salty, French fries.

A personal favourite of mine, the Capel Vale Whispering Hill Riesling. Layered aromas of honeysuckle and lime, followed by a palate of citrus, flint and mineral characteristics with a long crisp finish. Why with fries? Enough complexity and drive to cut through and perfectly balanced by the salty goodness of French Fries.

A Trait Pen-y-Bryn Chardonnay is the answer to Sunday arvo wines with the girls, a bowl of fries there to keep us going. The saltiness (maybe even fancy truffle salt) and crunchiness of the fries is perfectly suited to the fresh, crisp mouth feel, the minerality and delicate nature of this wine.

My pick would be a Frazer Woods La Cache Blanc de Blanc; the fresh bright acidity of the wine would cut through the richness of the fries.

I’m going with Aunt Alice’s Chardonnay. It’s all about acidity and fat. The acidity cuts through the fat creating this beautiful synergy. The richness of Chardonnay matches with the crispy, salty, oily, fatty French fry. Nothing better I say.
